Fillings

A dental filling, sometimes called a restoration, is the process of using the material to repair teeth that have cavities or that have undergone a root canal.  The impaired portion of the tooth is removed, and that portion is replaced with composite filling.  Fillings can be done during one appointment and anesthesia is necessary in order to allow the dentist to remove decay and apply medication to further protect nerve endings.

At Century Dental, we use the most up-to-date, long-lasting materials in our filling. In years past, silver or gold were strictly used to create fillings, but now that we know composites made of quartz resin can be used in combination with gold or porcelain, fillings are more natural looking than ever before. These fillings are then shaped and smoothed to ensure their authentic look and feel.  They attractively match existing teeth and last for years to come.  Patients may notice some temporary temperature sensitivity after fillings are done.

Crowns

A crown or cap is a porcelain covering placed over a tooth’s surface to restore its structure and appearance. Crowns are a way of protecting older, decayed, weakened or damaged teeth.  If you have had a root canal, or if you have a tooth that is damaged, a crown may be necessary to make sure that there are no additional problems with the tooth. Crowns cover the remaining portion of the old tooth and can be made from porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, bruxzir, zirconia, or full gold.  To maintain a natural look and feel, porcelain finished crowns are most popular because they can be matched to the shade of your natural teeth. The process of making and installing a crown takes two visits over a period of a few weeks.

During the first visit, the dentist takes a mold of your tooth, which is then sent to the lab to be created according to your individual specifications. In the meantime, your dentist will fit you with a temporary crown. When the permanent crown arrives back at Century, the patient will return for their second visit, which involves placement and fitting of the crown.  After the permanent crown is put in place, you will have your old smile back. Crowns are durable and will usually last about 10-15 years when cared for with regular brushing and flossing. Sensitivity may be experienced with the new crown but should subside over time.

Bridges

Bridges are another common way to replace lost teeth.  They are a permanent fixture that fits over existing teeth and are typically made of porcelain on top of metal. Your existing teeth are used to create a literal bridge across the space where your tooth is missing.  Bridges can sometimes be the solution to many of the same issues that implants are used for, depending on the circumstance.

A few different appointments are usually needed for adjustment and permanent fixture of a bridge.  Bridges are estimated to last 5 to 15 years with proper care.  Dr. Hanyon and the team at Century Dental utilize the most advanced techniques when it comes to fitting you with a bridge, ensuring that you receive the best possible results.
